DIPLOMA IN LORINERY SCIENCE
BUILD ON KNOWLEDGE GAINED IN THE CERTIFICATE COURSE
This course gives a more detailed look at the science behind bitting by taking a closer look at the forces applied with different bits and what is pressing on the horse’s tongue. You will start to categorize bits depending on their design and action.
ASSESSMENTS |
|
This course is assessed through two online short-answer exams and a Case Study. |
|

Course Costs: $464 NS Certified $588 Lantra Certified
THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD |
RESOLVED STATIC FORCES |
WORKING ANGLES |
Introduces the basic principles of the ‘Scientific Method’, encouraging students to look more in depth at research papers, as well as introducing hypotheses and data analysis. |
A more in-depth look at the distribution of forces which act on the horse’s head and mouth from the reins and bit. |
An in-depth look at the working angle; find out how to identify parts of the bit which are putting pressure onto the tongue and lips and look at the concept of bit rotation with regards to cheek type. |
|
CLASSIFICATION OF BITS |
DYNAMICS |
Find out more about using the operational and design aspects of the bit mouthpiece and cheek to a scheme for classifying. |
‘Rhythm of the Reins’ – look at data showing the riders rein signals and the frequency at which they are transferred to the horse. Have a go at figuring out how this data might be interpreted! |
Building on knowledge gained in the Certificate course, covering equine mouth anatomy and some basic physical principles, this course develops your scientific understanding of the bit and its action in the mouth.
